A criminal charge can put your rights and your future on the line. Whether you have been charged with misdemeanor, DUI or a serious felony allegation, you face serious penalties, if convicted.

If you are ever arrested, here are the most important things you should know.

Your Rights

Whether you have been charged or are still under investigation for a crime, you should know your rights. You should know that you have the right to remain silent.

The Fifth Amendment protects you against self-incrimination and you can use it, when law enforcement officers or investigators attempt to contact or interview you. Speaking to them alone may not be in your best interests. You should know that you have the right to defend yourself in court and you can seek a criminal defense attorney to do so.

Not Guilty

Being charged with a crime does not equal conviction. You can challenge the government’s case against you. But many defendants plead guilty without defending their case or looking for more favorable resolutions. This can limit your options and subject you to penalties that could have potentially avoided or reduced.

The Charges

You should know what charges you face. Have you been charged with a misdemeanor or a felony? It is important to know this since felonies have the potential for severe penalties, harsh terms of imprisonment, hefty fines and more.

The Options

Criminal cases are always unique, and there may be options available for your defense and other favorable resolutions. You should know whether there is a possibility of reduced penalties or alternatives to the terms of sentence. The best person to now this is a criminal defense lawyer.

Consult a Lawyer

Remember that it is a qualified and experienced lawyer who understands law better than you. The best option is to consult a lawyer who knows understands law well and is equipped to prepare effective defense strategies for you.
